In the period from 15 to 17 November 2018, Montenegrin students of doctoral programmes in biological, medical and biotechnical sciences visited the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg.

The visit was implemented in cooperation between the Ministry of Science and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, being an integral part of the annual plan for the implementation of accession of Montenegro to EMBL (European Molecular Biology Laboratory) and EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organisation). The purpose of the visit was to provide the country’s best students – future researchers in this field – with an opportunity to get familiar with the laboratories of this prestigious organisation, as well as with the possibilities for their further professional development.

During the visit, students had the opportunity to get acquainted with the programmes offered by EMBL and the manner in which they could use the state-of-the-art laboratories to complete their research. EMBL representatives held a series of presentations explaining the procedures for applying for research work in their centres.

The study visit was an opportunity for future researchers to visit the laboratories they were interested in and to get to know the leaders of research teams working in them. In addition, a meeting was organised with two doctoral students from our region, where the visiting students had a chance to get all the necessary information from the end-users of these programmes through direct communication with them.

The selection of candidates for the study visit to the EMBL was done by a commission formed by the Ministry of Science, based on the public call announced on 16 October 2018, and the following students were selected: Ivana Lalićević, Marija Vojinović, Milena Petrović, Miljana Anđelić, Olga Jokanović and Saša Perović.

The group was led by Professor Danilo Mrdak from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of the University of Montenegro, the delegate of Montenegro in EMBL and EMBO organisations.
